Seasnail hatchery (strombus gigas) in the Caribbean
Strombus Gigas, the giant caribbean seasnail (locally conch or karko), ages and ages. The local food is almost extinct because of intensive catch and high demand. The conch is placed on the CITES list of endangered species. We have made a proposal to start a hatchery and growout on Bonaire. Young conch can be used for restocking purposes locally and grown conch can be used as fine food for specialised restaurants and local people to prevent poaching from the wild.
