Seasnail hatchery (strombus gigas) in the Caribbean
Strombus Gigas, the giant caribbean seasnail (locally conch or karko), ages and ages. The local food is almost extinct because of intensive catch and high demand. The conch is placed on the CITES list of endangered species. We have made a proposal to start a hatchery and growout on Bonaire. Young conch can be used for restocking purposes locally and grown conch can be used as fine food for specialised restaurants and local people to prevent poaching from the wild. We are looking for investors in this project: profitable on the lomger term. For information contact us.
More healthy fatty acids in milk
DEiPAC experts are involved in developing economic dairy farmpractices to increase healthy fatty acids in milk: far more CLA and far less saturated fatty acids . The addition of linseed, linseedoils, sunflowersilage, sunfloweroils and algea are a.o. products and systems involved in a project in the northern part of the Netherlands (waddenregio) to produce yearround more healthy milk.
The production of edible mushrooms and high protein forage from surplus biomass
In Surinam( using rice straw, elephantgrass and bananaleaves), Colombia (using coffeewastes and bananaleaves) and Zambia (using waterhyacinth) on substrates from surplus biomass not edible for cattle and swine edible mushrooms are grown. The high protein surplus substrate after harvesting the mushrooms is perfect forage for cattle and swine. DEiPAC is involved in these concepts.
Algea: first algea congres in the Netherlands
May 27 2008 the first congress on the future of algea was held (www.algencongres.nl). Science, Production/processing and applications were adressed by many keynotespeakers. The efficient production of biodiesel from algea is far away but CO2 compensation is a topic. The use of several algea produced in an open or closed environment systems offer many promising opportunities for feed and food. For dairy cattle algea as a feedadditive can increase the amount of unsaturated fatty acids in milk. There are legal presently to feed algea to cattle but these are expected to be lifted. Ingrepro introduced the algea ‘Power farms’ principle. Ronald van Giessen
